DEPARTMENT F - SWINE
 
RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. All swine entered must be in place no later than 1:00 p.m. Fair Monday.
2. All swine entered must be free of disease.  The swine committee reserves the right to reject any entries they feel unfit 
for the health of the show.
3. The Junior Swine Show is open to Clarke County 4-H and FFA previous swine project members who are enrolled by 
January 1 of the year of the show. All new swine project members must be enrolled by March 1 of the year of the show.
4. All 4-H'ers and FFA'ers planning to exhibit swine at the Clarke County Fair must turn in an updated project record book
 to the Extension Office or VoAg Instructor no later than July 16, 2007.
5. All 4-H and FFA entries must have been personally managed and cared for by the exhibitor making the entry.  If an animal 
is not housed on property owned or rented by immediate family, then the exhibitor must notify the swine committee or Extension 
Office in writing explaining where the animal is housed.
6. All 4-H and FFA members must participate in the swine showmanship classes showing their own hog in order to receive Junior
 Show premiums. In conformation classes, if an exhibitor cannot show in class due to a committee approved absence or have two 
animals in the same class, the exhibitor must inform the show announcer by 9:00 a.m. the day of the show. Designee must be a 
Clarke Country 4-H or FFA swine exhibitor.
7. All hogs not weighing at least 220 pounds or weighing over 280 pounds at fair weigh-in will be sent home, since they do not
 meet weight requirements. Hogs that do not make weight need to be removed from the fairgrounds by 6 pm Monday of the fair.
8. Competition is open to any market hog, barrow or gilt or any breed or crossbreed.
9. All market hogs must be weighed on Monday at approximately 2:00 P.M., and classes will be determined by weight.  
All hogs must weigh between 220 and 280 pounds to be eligible to show and sell in the Junior Livestock Sale. 
All first place hogs will be eligible to compete in the Grand Champion market drive, and the second place hog in the class f
rom which the champion came from is legible to compete for the Reserve Champion market hop as well as the remaining first place hogs.
10. The number of hogs sold by one (1) exhibitor is limited to two (2).  All hogs offered for resale will be for the benefit of 
charitable organizations only. These animals will be sold at the Farmers Livestock Exchange or other buyers designated by 
the sale committee and all proceeds will be forwarded accordingly.  .40 of 1% of the sale price of hogs will be withheld for 
pork referendum.
11. To recognize hog buyers, $5.00 will be retained from the proceeds of each hog sold to purchase a newspaper advertisement.
12. All market hogs will be graded at the time of weigh-in on Monday. This will be done by ultra-sound equipment.
13. Exhibitors will be expected to keep their animals fed and watered and their pens clean and neat the entire week. 
If in the opinion of the committee, pens are not kept clean until the animal is removed from the fairgrounds, $10.00 per hog 
will be subtracted from the sale check of the exhibitor.  Bedding will not be permitted in the pens.
14. Gilt entries MUST be designated by January 1 for past  4-H members and by March 1 for new 4-H members. Youth must 
complete the breeding section of their project book to be eligible to show a gilt the following year.
15. No 4-H or FFA member or their parents will be permitted in the barn during the swine weigh-in or show. Only committee 
members or designated volunteers are permitted.
16. An exhibitor may only weigh-in three (3) hogs and can show only two (2) hogs due to limited space. All pigs weighed in at 
initial weigh in (1st Saturday in June) must weigh at least 80 lbs. in order to be eligible to show and sell at the current year 
Clarke County Fair.
17. All swine animals entered must comply with the Fair's Animal Health Regulations.  Any pre-show administering on any 
non FDA approved compound that may cause a quantitative or qualitative change in the characteristics of the animal on foot 
or in carcass will cause disqualification, and no premium money will be paid.  In the market animal auctions, all sale money
 will be withheld if after slaughter, the animal is found to have been tampered with or altered, or if the carcass is condemned.  
The management also has the right to disqualify any animals if the appearance or temperament of which has been changed 
or altered by any process.  This includes attempts to dye or discolor from the natural hair color and to the use of tranquilizers.  
In addition to the above penalties, any exhibitor caught in violation of such rules will be banned from showing and selling 
any livestock in project area at the current Clarke County Fair.  The following year, they will be banned from showing and 
selling an animal in that project area (swine) for the coming year.
18. All hogs must be kept in their pens between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. except the night of the show.

*Showmanship classes will be divided into Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Novice Showmen will be 
those youth who have not shown swine as a 4-H or FFA project previously at the Clarke County Fair. Junior Showman
 will be those exhibitors who will be 9, 10 and 11 years of age as of September 30, 2007. Intermediate showmen 
will be those exhibitors  who will be 12 and 13 years of age as of September 30, 2007 and Senior Showmen are 
those exhibitors who will be 14 years of age and older as of September 30, 2007.
 
JUNIOR SWINE SHOW SPECIAL AWARDS
 
OUTSTANDING YOUTH SWINE AWARD
A $25 cash award will be presented to the outstanding youth swine exhibitor by Barbara Morris in memory of James H. Morris.  
This award is a reflection of the exhibitor's showmanship abilities, animal and pen care, and respect towards other exhibitors
 during fair week.
 
CLARKE COUNTY RURITAN CLUB SWINE SHOWMANSHIP AWARDS
Banners will be presented to the first place exhibitors in the novice,
junior, intermediate and senior showmanship divisions by the Clarke County Ruritan Club.
 
GRAND CHAMPION MARKET HOG AWARD
Floyd Lofton, SMIDLEY Feeder Dealer, presents a $10.00 check to the
exhibitor of the Champion Market Hog.
 
GRAND CHAMPION MARKET HOG AWARD
In memory of Dr. R.B. Meeks whose career in the veterinary science field was deeply intertwined with the swine industry. 
 A silver bowl and a $100.00 cash award will be presented by Pete Meeks and Colleen Cornell to the exhibitor of the 
Grand Champion Market Hog of the Junior Swine Show.
 
VIRGINIA PORK INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION
The Virginia Pork Industry will award a silver tray to the sweepstakes
winner in the Junior Market Hog Show. The winner is to be selected by the total number of points accumulated in the 
show by the following systems: 1st- 5 points; 2nd-4 points; 3rd- 3 points; for placings in the single classes, pen classes, 
and fitting and showing classes. In case of a tie, the tying exhibitor placing highest in the fitting and showing class will 
receive the award.
 
JUNIOR SWINE HERDSMAN AWARD
In memory of Mrs. Geraldine Lofton, a $50.00 cash award will be presented by the Lucky Leaf 4-H Club to the youth 
who does the best job of presenting his/her project during fair week.  This will be divided equally among the exhibitors 
if more than one exhibitor's projects are in the same pen.
 
HOFF MEMORIAL AWARD
In memory of Mr. Floyd Hoff and Mr. Jock Hoff, a banner will be presented to the exhibitor for the Reserve Grand Champion 
Market Hog by an anonymous donor.
 
L. Floyd Jenkins Swine Award
The L. Floyd Jenkins Swine Award has been established in memory of Mr. L. Floyd Jenkins. This award is to be given to 
the exhibitor of Grand Champion Market Hog each year. Mr. Jenkins believed in honesty, hard work and responsibility. 
These characteristics can be developed at an early age by raising and caring for livestock. Hard work should be rewarded 
and respect should be earned, not given. The exhibitor of the Grand Champion Market Hog will receive a plague and a check.
